Quakers & Worship

Quaker Faith is a way of life rather than a set of doctrines. We seek to find the truth.

We believe everyone has a direct relationship with God, whatever their professed beliefs. We find this relationship is best experienced when we meet together in silent gathering with no pre-planned service.

In a Quaker meeting, outwardly nothing could be simpler. We all sit down together quietly in the worship space and wait. The waiting in silence can become very powerful and moving. It can be calm and restful or nudging, even stir up difficult feelings. Sometimes from the silence, someone may be moved to briefly speak or minister before the meeting settles back to quiet. We have no clergy to lead our worship; everyone is equal and therefore anyone can minister, provided they feel it helps gather and lead the meeting towards deeper worship.

Most meetings last about an hour. They are different each time and in each place. Most are on Sunday mornings but some Quaker meetings will also hold meetings at other times - midweek or evenings. Some are held online (zoom) or blended with in person worship.

Everyone regardless of their faith is welcome at a Quaker Meeting for Worship and you can just turn up. It is often helpful to check the times and directions with the individual meeting you plan to visit.
